What is GrammCrackers?
GrammCrackers is a unique approach to the arrangement of words and writing not taught anywhere else. Presented in just a few hours in an interactive, dynamic workshop, GrammCrackers simplifies and clarifies an often intimidating subject, giving all participants - regardless of background, education, or age - a "handle" they can use to effectively edit and improve their own writing.
It is not a shortcut, trick, or gimmick. It is easy, and it works.
How is GrammCrackers different from and superior to other writing courses?
Most writing rules and concepts are taught as though they are not related to one another. In contrast, the GrammCrackers workshop teaches a method of sentence analysis that connects all the rules together in a simple big picture, which gives everyone who takes the course - regardless of background - a "handle", providing them the confidence and skills to correct and improve his own writing.
Because of the way we teach the writing process, GrammCrackers participants depart the workshop with a self-confidence based on a measurable understanding of writing and on a newfound editing ability. This gives them a confidence that often translates into a continuing motivation to continue to improve written and spoken communication.
The GrammCrackers workshop can stand alone as a foundation for the participants to continue improving their writing on their own, or it can serve as a solid foundation for the participants to get more out of additional writing instruction than they would have without it.
In contrast to writing courses which focus on specific types of writing or specific types of errors, GrammCrackers participants learn a method of sentence analysis they can use and adapt to any type of writing, regardless of its complexity, purpose or style.
How long is a GrammCrackers Student Workshop?
A Student Workshop consists of five 2-hour sessions which generally take place over several weeks. However, the lessons can be presented over a shorter period of time when requested. The first part of the workshop focuses on the GrammCrackers method of sentence analysis, while the second part focuses on the most common writing errors, following the layout of error identification found in standardized tests.
How many students can attend a workshop?
Due to the intensive and personalized nature of the workshops, the preferred size should be no fewer than two students and no more than six. All students in a workshop must be the same age and gender, and must attend the same 5 sessions. The students do not need to know each other, but they may enjoy it more when they do! We will do our best to find a time that accommodates all the participants who want to take the workshop together.
What age student will benefit from a GrammCrackers workshop?
GrammCrackers workshops have been conducted for several thousand students - ages 12 (seventh grade) to 84 - with great success.
Is this just a grammar course?
No, but it does include grammar instruction, because an understanding of the basic structure of English grammar is critical to being able to correct and improve one's own writing. We can promise you, however, that you have never been taught it this way.
What is unique about GrammCrackers?
Most writing courses present the elements of grammar as self-contained units, as though each element or single word exists in a vacuum. For teachers, professors and writing coaches, this makes sense, because it transforms the broad subject of writing and grammar into conveniently small units.
The problem is that while this approach may work well for the teacher, it often doesn't work well for the student. On the contrary, it has resulted in measurably deficient writing skills for many students and professionals, and a lack of confidence (and embarrassment) about their ability to communicate effectively that can last for the rest of their lives.
GrammCrackers is completely different, and it turns the traditional approach to writing on its head.
Through participation in the dynamic, interactive workshop, students learn how to look at all words and all concepts through a fresh, new lens- a lens which clarifies and translates for them the relationships words have with each other, and how these word relationships determine how we should arrange the words. By the end of just a 10-hour workshop, participants have become effective, confident writers and editors, able to continue improving their communication skills on their own long after the workshop is over.
What Language Arts/English background does my child need to have for GrammCrackers to work for him?
Your child's educational background or writing ability is irrelevant. GrammCrackers starts at the beginning and re-formats your child's writing hard drive.
Do you recommend GrammCrackers for students with learning disabilities or language challenges?
Yes. In fact, the step-by-step GrammCrackers method is beneficial to these students who have been intimidated by the apparent randomness of the English language.
What is the cost of attending a GrammCrackers Student workshop?
The cost is $695 per student.
Is GrammCrackers available through the public school system?
Unfortunately, it is not. We hope, however, that GrammCrackers will be more widely available someday through interactive online resources.
Is GrammCrackers Student Workshop a test preparation course?
No, because its primary focus is building a solid base of knowledge and applying this knowledge, not on implementing test-taking strategies. Having said that, this foundation effectively and quite naturally translates into an ability to identify and correct a variety of writing errors, including those on the writing skills section of standardized tests.
